CHAPTER THIRTEEN

BIANCA

It took almost twenty-four hours for Celia to make the arrangements to get me released.

Honestly, I wasn’t entirely certain why I hadn’t claimed bridal amnesty sooner.

No—that wasn’t true. I did know why I hadn’t done it sooner. I didn’t want to end up permanently attached to some alien stranger for the rest of my life.

But now that I’d taken that leap, I walked out of the prison a free woman for the first time in three months, expecting to find my attorney waiting for me.

Instead, as I stepped out into the crisp fall air, I found Hado Bromlibo standing outside the gate, leaning back against a dark sedan parked with its engine running.

He was once again dressed in a human suit—an expensive one, by the looks of it, and one that must have been custom-made, given his size.

I slowed as I reached the end of the long, fenced walkway, taking in the sight of him.

God, he’s beautiful.

Hado pushed off from against the car and stood straight, his hands fisted in his pants pockets as he watched me with those bright, sapphire-blue eyes of his.

“I take it you’re here for me?” I asked warily, coming to a halt while I was still eight feet away from the hired car.

“I am. And it took quite a bit of finagling to make sure that happened.” He didn’t take a step toward me. It was a good thing, too, because I was prepped to run.

Not that I had any idea where I would run to. I just knew that something about this alien man set my entire system on high alert.

Fight or flight.

But that wasn’t quite right, was it?

Because I didn’t want to fight him. And I wasn’t entirely certain I wanted to flee from him, either.

No, it’s more along the lines of kiss, marry, kill.

I bit back a laugh.

I guessed out of those three, I’d have to choose kiss. Despite my pronouncement the day before, I had absolutely zero intention of marrying anyone. And he was far too pretty to kill.

“I was expecting my attorney,” I said.

“Ms. Hobbs? She and I made other arrangements.”

Obviously.

This completely screwed up my plans.

I hadn’t told Celia Hobbs about the necklace—or, more to the point, about the files saved in the crystal matrix of the necklace’s diamond. But I had intended to tell her today on the way back into the city—at which point she would, I’d hoped, draw on her extensive network of connections in Manhattan and arrange to have the diamond fished out of the bottom of the elevator shaft.

“The best laid plans of mice and men,” I muttered to myself. And women. Somehow, the poet had left women out of his calculations. Leaving us to fend for ourselves as usual.

Of course.

Fine.

I had another twenty-four hours before I was supposed to report to be transported to Station 21.

If I didn’t show up, of course, they would simply beam me up from wherever I was. But this was supposed to give the process some amount of dignity.
